Oneida, Kentucky

Where Rivers Meet and History Lives

Oneida is a historic unincorporated community located about ten miles northeast of Manchester, situated at the confluence of the Red Bird River, Goose Creek, and Bullskin Creek - the headwaters of the South Fork of the Kentucky River. Rich in Appalachian heritage, Oneida offers peaceful country living with a fascinating history.

About Oneida

Oneida's history is deeply intertwined with Kentucky's frontier past. In the early 1800s, the area was a center of the salt-making industry, with the Goose Creek Salt Works being so vital that Daniel Boone once offered to re-route the Wilderness Road to pass through here. Clay County went on to become Kentucky's leading salt producer during the nineteenth century.

The community is also known for its role in the famous Baker-Howard feud, one of Appalachia's most notable family conflicts. In response to the violence, James Anderson Burns founded Oneida Baptist Institute in 1899, believing that education was the path to peace. The school continues to operate today and remains central to the community's identity.
